Minions has set a new opening weekend box-office record in Russia, while Inside Out has become Russia’s highest-grossing Disney/Pixar animated film ever.
The Despicable Me spinoff surpassed the previous opening-weekend record, set just three months ago by Furious 7. It grossed 864.8 million rubles ($15.2 million), Universal’s Russian office said, compared with the 857 million rubles ($15 million) the seventh installment in the Fast and Furious franchise grossed in April.
The previous opening weekend record had lasted for four years, since Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides grossed 749 million rubles in its first four days of release back in 2011.
Minions was also responsible for the highest-ever number of opening-weekend admissions in Russia at 3.5 million.
This summer has been successful for Hollywood animation in Russia in general.
Inside Out, which came out on June 18, has grossed just over 1 billion rubles ($17.6 million) to become Disney/Pixar’s highest-grossing animated film in Russia ever, Disney’s local office said. The film also became Disney’s 10th release to hit the 1 billion ruble mark in Russia.
