During the ceremony, Boseman earned a posthumous statuette for his role as Levee Green in Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom. Boseman’s wife Simone Ledward Boseman accepted the award, who thanked the film’s cast and crew for her husband’s achievement.
“If you see the world unbalanced, be a crusader that pushes heavily on the seesaw of the mind,” his wife shared, noting the quote was by her husband.
The late actor, who died last August after being diagnosed with colon cancer four years prior, is the second posthumous nominee recognized in the lead male category after Massimo Troisi for 1996’s The Postman. This marks his second SAG Award win following the Black Panther cast winning for best cast in 2019.
Boseman entered the ceremony already having set a record as the first actor to earn four SAG Award nominations in a single year all for motion pictures – his lead role in Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom, his supporting role in Da 5 Bloods, and being a part of both films’ cast.
The actor is tied with Jamie Foxx and Maggie Smith for most nominations in a single year with four nods. (Foxx earned four nods in 2005 for his roles in Redemption: The Stan Tookie Williams Story, Ray, and Collateral. Smith earned her four nods in 2013 for her roles in Downton Abbey and The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel.)
Boseman’s wife accepted his Golden Globe win this February, sharing in a speech “He would say something beautiful. Something inspiring, something that would amplify that little voice inside of us that tells us you can, that tells you to keep going, that calls you back to what you were meant to be doing in this moment. I don’t have his words but we have to take all the moments to celebrate those we love,” Boseman said at the end of her speech.
Having won a Golden Globe and SAG Award for his role in Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom, Boseman’s final awards tour will potentially achieve one last major honor during the 93rd Academy Awards on April 25.
