Sam Waterston is getting involved in some Monkey Business.
Waterston will lend his voice to the story of Curious George creators Hans and Margret Rey for the documentary Monkey Business: The Curious Adventures of George’s Creators. The Newsroom actor will narrate the feature doc about the husband and wife writer-illustrator team who, in 1936, created the precocious monkey that went on to star in numerous children’s books, animated TV series and feature films.
“As a child, I knew and loved the Curious George stories,” Waterston said Thursday in a statement. “My grandchildren are delighted by them now. I didn’t know much about the Reys or who created them. It’s a terrific story. I’m very glad the invitation to narrate the artful, apt and imaginative documentary that Ema Ryan Yamazaki and her team have made about them came my way.”
First-time feature director Yamazaki helmed Monkey Business, which is currently in postproduction and crowdfunding the costs through Kickstarter. Yamazaki obtained 300 boxes of the Reys’ personal archives for the doc, which will be a combination of archival materials, interviews and original animation.
It was recently announced that a live-action Curious George movie is in the works at Universal, with Shrek helmer Andrew Adamson in talks to direct and Brian Grazer and Ron Howard set to produce through their Imagine Entertainment banner.
