Samuel Goldwyn Films has picked up the U.S. rights to Craig Pryce’s The Marijuana Conspiracy, which stars Julia Sarah Stone, Morgan Kohan, Brittany Bristow, Tymika Tafari and Kyla Young.
The indie drama from Pot Luck Films recounts a real-life Canadian cannabis study in 1972 where 20 young women endured a controversial 98-day human experiment to study the effects of marijuana ahead of possible decriminalization of the recreational drug. Samuel Goldwyn Films plans an April 20, 2021 day and date release domestically, while Vortex Media will release the film in Canada.
“The Marijuana Conspiracy looks into the lives of these women and tells a story that needs to be known. We are proud to share that story,” Peter Goldwyn, president of Samuel Goldwyn Films, said in a statement. The Marijuana Conspiracy also stars Marie Ward, Gregory Calderone, Luke Bilyk and Paulino Nunes.
“We couldn’t be happier to partner with Samuel Goldwyn to release this important true story. Craig has made an entertaining movie highlighting important issues of the time that still resonate today,” Justin Rebelo, CEO Vortex Media, added in his own statement.
The indie is produced by Pryce, Jennifer Haufler, Marc Pancer, Colin Brunton, Katarzyna Kochany, Diana Zlomislic and Julie Lawrence, with Pryce also executive producing.
