MADRID – French director Jacques Demy will be honored at the 59th San Sebastian Film Festival with a retrospective of his work , organizers announced Monday.
“Although initially linked with eh young directors who formed part of the nouvelle vague, Demy’s work ended up becoming so unique and difficult to classify that he set off along an utterly personal path all his own. His original approach to ‘singing films’ and his exquisite sense of artistic direction always shunned any fashion or trend in cinema at that time,” the festival said in the announcement.
The showcase will include 14 feature films, four shorts and three documentaries about Demy and his work by his wife Agnes Varda. Films like “Parking,” “Une Chambre en Ville,” “Lady Oscar” and Golden Palm winner “The Umbrellas of Cherbourg” are a few of the titles to run in the sidebar.
Varda and Demy’s son Mathieu Demy— whose directorial debut “Americano” will compete in San Sebastian’s Official Section– will present the retrospective, along with costume designer Rosalie Varda.
San Sebastian runs Sept. 16-24 in Spain’s northern Basque region.
