This debut feature about one man's hellish journey through a Nazi concentration camp has received raves ever since it debuted in Cannes, both for its dramatic storyline and for its groundbreaking, subjective visual style. The film from the director who used to work for Bela Tarr is perhaps the only foreign-language entry considered a lock for an Oscar nomination.
Sony Pictures ClassicsThree acting Oscar hopefuls — Son of Saul lead actor Geza Rohrig, The Danish Girl and Ex Machina supporting actress Alicia Vikander and Straight Outta Compton supporting actor O’Shea Jackson, Jr. — will receive Virtuoso awards at the Santa Barbara International Film Festival, the festival announced Thursday. They will join four previously announced Virtuosos — Love & Mercy‘s Elizabeth Banks and Paul Dano, Black Mass‘ Joel Edgerton and 9-year-old Room star Jacob Tremblay — at a ceremony on Feb. 6 at Santa Barbara’s historic Arlington Theatre as part of SBIFF’s 31st edition, which runs Feb. 3-13.
“These breakthrough actors are remarkable performers and have an illustrious career ahead of them,” SBIFF executive director Roger Durling said in a statement. “We have followed them along their artistic pursuits and are excited to join them in next steps of their journeys.”
Previous Virtuosos include Chadwick Boseman, Ellar Coltrane, Logan Lerman, David Oyelowo, Rosamund Pike, J.K. Simmons, Jenny Slate, Ann Dowd, Elle Fanning, Ezra Miller, Eddie Redmayne, Omar Sy, Quvenzhane Wallis, Demian Bichir, Rooney Mara, Melissa McCarthy, Shailene Woodley, Andy Serkis, Patton Oswalt, Andrew Garfield, John Hawkes, Lesley Manville, Hailee Steinfeld, Jacki Weaver, Emily Blunt, Carey Mulligan, Saoirse Ronan, Gabourey Sidibe, Michael Stuhlbarg, Casey Affleck, Marion Cotillard, Viola Davis, Rosemarie DeWitt, Sally Hawkins, Richard Jenkins, Melissa Leo, James McAvoy, Ellen Page, Amy Ryan, Michael Shannon, Michael B. Jordan, Brie Larson, Jared Leto and June Squibb.
The fest also has announced that Black Mass star Johnny Depp will receive its Maltin Modern Master Award; Room‘s Larson and Brooklyn‘s Ronan will share its Outstanding Performer of the Year Award; Spotlight trio Michael Keaton, Rachel McAdams and Mark Ruffalo will share its American Riviera Award; and Carol‘s Mara will collect its Cinema Vanguard Award. The participants in the annual Directors Panel, which is moderated by yours truly, are forthcoming.
