Sylvester Stallone, a best supporting actor Oscar nominee for Ryan Coogler‘s Creed, the latest installment in the 39-year-old Rocky franchise that Stallone helped to originate, has been tapped to receive the Montecito Award at the 2016 Santa Barbara International Film Festival, organizers announced Tuesday.
The ceremony will take place at Santa Barbara’s historic Arlington Theatre on Feb. 9 as part of SBIFF’s 31st edition, which is set to run Feb. 3-13.
“Sylvester Stallone’s performance in Creed has reminded us of what a true talent he is and what a joy it is to share in his successes as the many beloved characters he has created,” SBIFF executive director Roger Durling said in a statement. “Since he first hit the silver screen as Rocky Balboa nearly four decades ago, he has been a force in the industry both on film and behind the scenes. He is a true legend in our field, and it is our privilege to present him with the Montecito Award and to continue to honor his legacy.”

The Montecito Award has been presented annually, since 2005, to “a performer who has given a series of classic and standout performances throughout his or her career and whose style has made a major contribution to film.” Previous recipients include Oprah Winfrey, Daniel Day-Lewis, Geoffrey Rush, Julianne Moore, Kate Winslet, Javier Bardem, Naomi Watts, Annette Bening and Jennifer Aniston.
The fest also has announced that Black Mass star Johnny Depp will receive its Maltin Modern Master Award; Room‘s Larson and Brooklyn‘s Ronan will share its Outstanding Performer of the Year Award; Spotlight trio Michael Keaton, Rachel McAdams and Mark Ruffalo will share its American Riviera Award; Carol‘s Mara will collect its Cinema Vanguard Award; and Love & Mercy‘s Elizabeth Banks and Paul Dano, Black Mass‘ Joel Edgerton, Straight Outta Compton supporting actor O’Shea Jackson, Jr., Son of Saul lead actor Geza Rohrig, Room supporting actor Jacob Tremblay and The Danish Girl and Ex Machina supporting actress Alicia Vikander will receive Virtuoso awards. The participants in the annual Directors Panel, which will be moderated by yours truly, are forthcoming.
