Scarlett Johansson is set to star in genre-bending feature Bride, a riff on the classic character the Bride of Frankenstein and the latest feature partnership for Apple and A24.
The logline for Bride reads: A woman created to be an ideal wife — the singular obsession of a brilliant entrepreneur — rejects her creator, and is forced to flee her confined existence, confronting a world that sees her as a monster. It is on the run that she finds her true identity, her surprising power, and the strength to remake herself as her own creation.
Sebastián Lelio, the Oscar winner behind A Fantastic Woman and Gloria, will direct the sci-fi thriller. Lauren Schuker Blum and Rebecca Angelo, who wrote the Ryan Gosling starrer Wolfman, will pen the screenplay with Lelio.
Johansson and Jonathan Lia will produce through their These Pictures banner. Keenan Flynn will co-produce.
“It is long overdue for Bride to step out of the shadow of her male counterpart and stand alone,” said Johansson. “Working alongside Rebecca Angelo and Lauren Schuker Blum, Sebastian and I are extremely excited to emancipate this classic anti-heroine and reanimate her story to reflect the change we see today.”
Bride is the latest team-up for the tech giant and the indie studio. Apple and A24 released doc Boys State and are behind Sofia Coppola’s On the Rocks, starring Bill Murray and Rashida Jones, as well as YA novel adaptation The Sky is Everywhere.
Johansson and These Pictures are repped by CAA and Morris Yorn. Schuker Blum and Angelo are represented by Management 360 and The Nord Group. Lelio is represented by the U.K.’s 42, Management 360 and Granderson Des Rochers
