SYDNEY — National film agency Screen Australia will invest in PJ Hogan’s upcoming feature, Mental, CEO Ruth Harley said Monday.
Mental will see Hogan reunite with his Muriel’s Wedding star, Toni Colette, in the comedy he’s also penned, about the colourful Moochmore family and their crazy, charismatic, hot-tempered nanny, Shaz ( Colette).
Casting is currently underway here for the five teenage girls who will play Shaz’s young charges.
“I’m thrilled to announce Screen Australia’s involvement in Mental. PJ Hogan is a hugely talented filmmaker whose studio-financed films have grossed in excess of half a billion dollars and attracted a consistent level of critical acclaim,” Screen Australia’s Harley said. “Add into the mix the delicious prospect of PJ teaming up again with Toni Collette, one of Australia’s most gifted comic actresses, and we look set to see a wildly entertaining film.”
Storybridge Films is producing Mental with LA-based Zucker Productions. Producers are Todd Fellman, Jocelyn Moorhouse and Jerry and Janet Zucker. Arclight is handling international sales while Universal will distribute Mental in Australia, New Zealand and the UK.
Colette has had a busy few months: In April she gave birth to her second child, while her latest feature, Jesus Henry Christ, unspooled at the Tribeca Film Festival. Last week her Showtime series, United States of Tara was cancelled after three seasons.
