There will be more barking.
Illumination Entertainment and Universal on Tuesday announced that a sequel to this summer’s animated hit The Secret Life of Pets is a go, and that it will hit theaters July 13, 2018. It is Illumination’s second major franchise after the Despicable Me and spinoff Minions series.
The news comes as the Chris Renaud-directed Secret Life of Pets crosses the $400 million mark at the global box office, including a mighty $300.3 million in North America, where it opened July 8. The family film still has numerous markets in which to bow overseas, so it is far from done with its run.
Rinaud is set to return to helm the sequel, reteaming him with writer Brian Lynch. Illumination founder and CEO Chris Meledandri and longtime collaborator Janet Healy will produce.
