The Greek film Little England (Mikra Anglia) won the Golden Goblet Award for best film at the Shanghai International Film Festival and also secured the best director award for its director Pantelis Voulgaris.
Pinelopi Tsilika added another Golden Goblet to Little England’s haul when she won the best actress award.
The jury at the 17th edition of the fest was led by Chinese actress Gong Li, the first time a woman has headed the panel.
The Jury Grand Prix went to the only Chinese film in competition,The Uncle Victory, by Zhang Meng, who directed the popular The Piano in a Factory.
There was controversy behind this award as the popular actor Huang Haibo, who features in the movie, was detained for 15 days for having sex with a prostitute and the film was not shown in public.
Questions about the film were not answered at a news conference at the event.
The best screenplay award went to Cyril Gely and Volker Schlöndorff for Diplomacy.
The best actor gong went to Vithaya Pansringarm, who was cast as Chavoret in Tom Waller’s The Last Executioner, about the last executioner in Thailand, which had its world premiere at the fest.
The jury also included Korean director Im Sang-soo, British director Sally Potter, Danish director Lone Scherfig, Chinese director Liu Jie, Iranian actor Peyman Moaadi and Japanese director Shunji Iwai.
Best cinematographer went to Luo Pan for The Sacred Arrow, and the outstanding artistic achievement in music award went to Gregg Alexander for Begin Again.
This year’s Shanghai fest featured Hollywood stars Natalie Portman, John Cusack and Nicole Kidman, and closed with an early screening of Transformers: Age of Extinction.
