To whet the appetites of the fans awaiting the trailer for Snow White and the Huntsman – which should be revealed on Thursday — Universal released a dramatic poster featuring the film’s three main characters.

The banner features Kristen Stewart as Snow White, wearing a dark frock and carrying a dagger in her hand. To her left, the huntsman, Chris Hemsworth, stares pensively, carrying an axe and surrounded by trees. To Snow White’s right, the Evil Queen (Charlize Theron) stands against a dark backdrop. The queen carries an evil-looking dagger, and is surrounded by black birds. In the background, an epic battle seems to be taking place.

Universal’s project, which is helmed by Rupert Sanders, is set for a June 2012 release. Character posters, which have already been released, hint at the fact that this will be a much darker telling of the famous tale, and that Snow White will be a much tougher heroine. Evan Daugherty wrote the spec script which caused a bidding war and started the project rolling.

The look and feel of Universal’s film is in stark contrast to Relativity’s upcoming Snow White film, Mirror Mirror. That film, directed by Tarsem Singh, features Lily Collins as the lead and Julia Roberts as the Queen. From the first photos from the film, Singh’s version promises to be a brighter and lighter tale. Relativity’s film is set for a March 2012 release.
