Sony Pictures Home Entertainment’s new 4K Ultra HD movie streaming service, Ultra, will debut April 4 on select Sony 4K Ultra HD TVs with Android in the U.S. Plans for the service were first announced at CES in January.
Available through Sony Pictures Store, Ultra will offer movies for purchase and playback in 4K Ultra HD resolution, with many including high dynamic range (HDR) and digital extras. Available titles will include new releases such as Concussion, The Night Before and The Walk; and library titles such as Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon and Ghostbusters, priced at $30 in 4K with HDR (Sony has been busy remastering library titles in 4K with HDR).
According to Sony, Ultra is compatible with UltraViolet, meaning that users will be able to link Ultra profiles to UltraViolet libraries, as well as stream Sony content that was previously purchased or redeemed through other UltraViolet-compatible retailers. Sony Pictures Store customers who already own HD versions of select titles can upgrade them to 4K on Ultra for a discounted price, the company said.
Customers who purchase eligible Sony 4K Ultra HD TVs with Ultra this summer will receive four complimentary movies when they sign up for the service.
