Guardian of the Galaxy‘s Karen Gillan is joining Dwayne Johnson and Kevin Hart in Sony’s Jumanji.
Nick Jonas and Jack Black also will star in the continuation of the 1995 fantasy-adventure film to be directed by Sex Tape director Jake Kasdan. The Scottish actress rounds out the cast of the film, which is set to begin principal photography in August in Honolulu.
Matt Tolmach and William Teitler are producing the project. Johnson and Kasdan are executive producing, along with Ted Field, Mike Weber, David Householter, Chris Van Allsburg, and Dany Garcia.
Sony is set to release Jumanji on July 28, 2017.
Gillan rose to fame as the companion of the 11th doctor on the popular British sci-fi series Doctor Who. She crossed over to mainstream American audiences with Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy, where she played nebula, an evil henchman with a father-complex, a role she will reprise for James Gunn’s sequel, which is due out May 5, 2017.
She is repped by UTA, the U.K.’s Troika and Jackoway Tyerman.
In an Instagram post, Johnson welcomed Gillan to the cast, writing, “This isn’t just any role, but in many ways the most important role of the movie. We had to find a girl. But not just any girl. A girl who has ‘Chutzpah.’ ”
