Sony PicturesGood news for audiences who’ve seen Sony’s first two attempts at the Spider-Man movie franchise: You won’t have to sit through the origin for a third time when Tom Holland takes over role.
“I think that everybody feels like, you know he got bit by a spider and you know Uncle Ben died,” screenwriter Jonathan Goldstein revealed on Grantland‘s The Andy Greenwald Podcast. “We probably don’t need to revisit that.”
That’s not the only change promised in the reboot, which will deliver the third version of Peter Parker seen by movie audiences in the last decade and a half. “I think it’ll be a fun departure from the Peter Parker you’ve seen,” Goldstein’s writing partner John Francis Daley said. “Now he is truly a kid and I think the stakes are increased in that his struggle through high school is very real and isn’t just sort of a side note. It matters now.”
Goldstein expanded on the focus on Parker as a high-schooler: “We want to explore the fact that just because you get super powers, [it] doesn’t make you into a really sophisticated, successful adult,” he said. “He’s still a kid, and he’s clumsy and he’s a geek and he’s a bit of an outcast and, in many ways, the super powers amplify that and exacerbate his trying to fit in.”
