The first trailer for Space Jam: A New Legacy dropped Saturday morning and immediately prompted a lot of chatter on social media. The first wave of excitement came from seeing LeBron James and Looney Tunes company in the sequel 25 years in the making. But then, something else happened.
Viewers noticed that a lot of characters from assorted Warner Bros.’ properties were hanging around in the background, giving the film’s world something of a Ready Player One feel (also a WB property).
From It’s Pennywise to the flying monkeys from The Wizard of Oz to the droogs in A Clockwork Orange to an agent from The Matrix series, there was plenty to spot. There even appeared to be Mr. Freeze from Batman & Robin.
Space Jam: A New Legacy features Sonequa Martin-Green and Don Cheadle, among a slew of NBA and WNBA players. Fans of the first film have their fingers crossed for Bill Murray and Wayne Knight cameos.
Living-legend Michael Jordan starred in the beloved original film. Fans assume he will pop in for a cameo in A New Legacy. The Space Jam installment marks the first theatrically released film to feature Looney Tunes characters since 2003’s Looney Tunes: Back in Action.
Space Jam: A New Legacy will be available on HBO Max for 31 days after theatrical release on July 16.
