Harvey Weinstein is nothing if not bold.
Two months after The Artist began winding down, the Weinstein Co. rereleased the Oscar-winning film in more than 700 theaters across the country in a Mother’s Day push.
The results, however, were soft at best, with the film grossing $161,000 for a poor per screen average of $241.
All told, The Artist has grossed $44.4 million domestically and nearly $87 million internationally for an okay total $131.2 million.
The weekend’s big headline at the North American specialty box office turned out to be Fox Searchlight’s The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel, which cracked the top 10 chart in its second weekend, grossing $2.7 million from 178 theaters for a per screen average of $14,888.
Directed by John Madden, Marigold Hotel was the counter-programming title of choice for adults. The British film, starring Judi Dench, Tom Wilkinson, Bill Nighy, Maggie Smith and Dev Patel, has earned more than $75 million overseas, with much of the earnings coming from the U.K. and Australia.
