‘Spider-Man: Homecoming’ Trailer Screens Early at CinemaCon

The new Spider-Man: Homecoming trailer crawled out of its web a little early for those who were in the audience at CinemaCon.

Ahead of its launch Tuesday, Sony screened the trailer Monday evening during its presentation at the Las Vegas convention for theater owners.

Tom Holland reprises his Captain America role as Peter Parker Spider-Man. The Marvel Studios/Sony film also stars Robert Downey Jr., Zendaya, and Marisa Tomei. At CinemaCon, Holland took the stage with director Jon Watts, Marvel’s Kevin Feige and producer Amy Pascal.

“This really feels like a homecoming for me,” said Holland, who first took the CinemaCon stage one year ago when he was introduced as Peter Parker ahead of the release of Marvel’s Civil War.

The action-packed trailer gives viewers the first good look at Michael Keaton as the villainous Vulture. It also shows plenty of interactions between Stark and Parker, and a better look at Spidey’s new suit.

“Can’t you just be a friendly, neighborhood Spider-Man?” says Stark to Parker.

After Parker causes some trouble, Stark criticizes his actions, to which Parker responds: “I’m just trying to be like you.” At that point, Stark demands the tricked-out Spidey suit back. The suit has, among its new bells and whistles, a spider-drone that comes out of the center emblem.

The film from director Jon Watts opens July 7.

While they highlighted the live-action version, Sony didn’t introduce new material from the untitled Spider-Man animated film, slated for a Dec. 21, 2018 release; it’s written by Phil Lord, who is executive producing the project alongside his Lego Movie co-director Chris Miller.

Sony Pictures Animation, however, did preview some new footage from several of its upcoming projects, including live action, drawings and unfinished art from the Will Gluck-helmed live action/CG hybrid Peter Rabbit.

Slated to open March 23, 2018, the film’s cute title character is voiced by James Corden. Live action or voice cast members also include Margot Robbie, Rose Byrne and Daisy Ridley.

SPA has upped its output from one film every 18 months to having five planned theatrical releases over the next two years.

Sony showed material from the trio of 2017 titles: Clips from Smurfs: The Lost Village (April 7), unfinished animation from Aug. 4 release The Emoji Movie, and art from December nativity story The Star.

The 2018 slate includes Hotel Transylvania 3 from the franchise’s director Genndy Tartakovsky (Sept. 21).
