Spider-Man fans shouldn’t be too sure they know everything about Zendaya’s character in next year’s Spider-Man: Homecoming. The Disney star had been rumored to play Mary Jane Watson in Jon Watts’ upcoming reboot of the Marvel superhero, but she’s not ready to confirm that just yet.
Talking to The Hollywood Reporter senior film writer Tatiana Siegel for this week’s cover story, the actress played coy about just who she’ll be playing in the movie.
“People are going to react over anything,” she said, “But nothing [about who she is playing] is fact. It’s like, you guys are just making shit up at this point and then reacting to it. Whenever we were on set, one of us gets some random character name [on the call sheet]. [Bloggers were] like, ‘Oh they must be so and so.’ And we just crack up about it, because it’s like, ‘Whatever you want to think. You’ll find out.’ It’s funny to watch the guessing game.”
She did, however, throw out some details about her mystery character.
“My character is not romantic,” she said, denying that she’s playing Peter Parker’s love interest in the movie. “My character is like very dry, awkward, intellectual and because she’s so smart, she just feels like she doesn’t need to talk to people, like, ‘My brain is so far ahead of you that you’re just not really on my level.’ So she comes off very weird. But to me, she is very cool because she’s deep. She’s always thinking about something, always reading.”
That really doesn’t sound like any version of Mary Jane that has appeared before — which means that either online speculation is wrong and she’s playing an entirely different character (Debra Whitman, perhaps?), or else M.J. is going to be significantly different in Homecoming than anything we’ve seen before.
Spider-Man: Homecoming, which sees Tom Holland step into the webs as Peter Parker/Spider-Man, will be released July 7, 2017.
