Filmmaker Spike Lee is now a collectible.
The director, who is in this year’s awards conversation with drama Da 5 Bloods, is getting his own figurine via Funko’s popular Pop! line. The vinyl figure is approximately 4.25-inches tall and will hit stores exclusively in May. It will retail for $10.99.
The figure harkens back to the outfit Lee wore to the 2019 Oscars. He sports a purple suit and gold sneakers, knuckle rings with the words “Love” and “Hate,” and a hat with a symbol from his Oscar-winning movie, BlacKkKlansman.
Funko Pops celebrate a wide swath of all things pop culture and in that swath is a small but growing line of filmmakers. Alfred Hitchcock was the first to get the Pop! treatment and the list has grown to about 17 writers, directors and producers, ranging from Guillermo del Toro and Taika Waititi to Jason Blum, Vince Gilligan, Ava Duvernay and Patty Jenkins.
“Creating a line of Pop! Directors is a wonderful way to show our appreciation and celebrate the brilliant minds behind the properties we all love,” said Funko’s senior manager of brand & licensing Lauren Winarski. “When you look at the impact of Spike Lee’s films like Do the Right Thing and his status in pop culture, we are more than thrilled to have him join the collection.”
The company has been pursuing Lee for the line for several years, but it’s only last year that he finally acquiesced.
