For one Trekkie in the U.K., a big dream turned into a big loss. His relationship now seems destined to go where many have before – into the dustbin.
British DJ Tony Alleyne, 58, spent 10 years transforming his apartment into a replica of the U.S.S. Voyager interior from Star Trek: Voyager. Unfortunately for Alleyne, his renovation project took place inside an apartment owned by his soon-to-be ex-wife and must now be torn down.
“To say I’m gutted is an understatement,” Alleyne told The Sun. “It’s my life’s work – and it looks like it’s going into a skip.” The fourth live-action series to chronicle Starfleet’s continuing voyages, Star Trek: Voyager was perhaps best known for being the first Trek series in which a starship featured a female commanding officer; one can’t help but wonder if Alleyne appreciates the irony now that his wife has taken control of his ship.
Wife Georgina, 52, had been paying the mortgage, according to the paper, and now wishes to sell the unit as a conventional property. The duo split in 1994, but is only now making the divorce official. Alleyne started working on the renovation in 1999, begging the question why he didn’t purchase the flat from her earlier — or doesn’t do so now.
The one-bedroom apartment was complete with a full computer console, flashing lights and “transporters.” To do it all over again would cost an estimated $150,000.
“I admit there were tears,” confessed Alleyne.
