I don’t want to put the cart before the Bantha here, because I know there isn’t even an official title yet. But come on. Where is the teaser trailer for Star Wars: Episode VIII already?
As a huge fan and nerd, I am jonesin‘ here! And I refuse to believe I am alone.
Let me start by acknowledging that we are so spoiled these days. Trailers are so easily accessible the moment they are released. Thanks to the internet, and more importantly, social media, the instant a teaser for a highly anticipated film comes out, the preview is at our fingertips.
I can remember in high school (1999), paying for a ticket to see Freddie Prinze Jr.’s Wing Commander just to watch the Star Wars: The Phantom Menace trailer showing beforehand, then ditching the movie.
Money well spent.
Still, for all the groundswell that was nerds losing it for that Phantom Menace trailer (which really was awesome and totally tricked all of us into thinking we were getting a killer new Star Wars flick), that was hardly the first time fans spent money on a ticket just for another film’s trailer.
It seems Tim Burton’s Batman (1989) holds that distinction.
But, with all that said: Where is our Episode VIII trailer?!
Some of you may be thinking, “Chill, dude. You just got a full movie in Rogue One: A Star Wars Story! It says Star Wars right there in the title! Do I need to cut you with my lightsaber?!” And that’s fair.
Perhaps, therein lies why Episode VIII doesn’t have a title or trailer yet.
It’s conceivable the next installment in the iconic saga has been under lock and key in an effort to not diminish any of the excitement and ticket sales from Rogue One. But I still think a teaser for VIII could have been paired with Rogue One and everything would have been just dandy.
My best justification for my nerd rage is that we already had a trailer for Force Awakens by this time relative to its release (Dec. 18, 2015). The first teaser for Force Awakens was released Nov. 28, 2014, more than a year in advance. Episode VIII opens Dec. 15 of this year.
And it was glorious!
So what the heck?
More infuriating (not really, but more annoying), is that fact that producer Kathleen Kennedy said we won’t see anything from Episode VIII until closer to spring!

Whaaaa?! (Heavy sigh)
So, fine. Not much can be done about it. We just have to twiddle our thumbs and wait or go see Rogue One for the 10th time. (And now that I think about it, Rogue One’s first teaser didn’t hit until the April before it was released — but for some reason it didn’t feel like as painful a wait.)
But yeah, at least we won’t have to buy a ticket to another movie just to see the Episode VIII trailer when it finally drops. So, there’s that, which is nice.
