As Star Wars: Episode VII solidifies its roster, the original characters will invade the baseball field Wednesday, when the St. Louis Cardinals host the Pittsburgh Pirates.
ESPN will transport fans to a galaxy far, far away as Wednesday Night Baseball, presented by T-Mobile, shows the force can be with you even in the bleachers.
The special Star Wars Night airing live from Busch Stadium in St. Louis, Missouri, will feature movie-magic elements throughout the telecast, including music from the famous scores by composer John Williams, footage from the films and a baseball-themed scroll mimicking the iconic opening credits of the George Lucas classic.
Fans at the ballpark will also get to meet Star Wars characters in costume, and special segments will air during the ESPN broadcast throughout the game that feature creatures from the upcoming animated show Star Wars Rebels.
Not in costume but still wielding their own special commentary powers, ESPN’s Jon Sciambi will call the action for the national telecast with analysts Rick Sutcliffe and Doug Glanville.
There’s no word yet as to whether Darth Vader will be throwing out the first pitch, or if we can expect to see Luke Skywalker and Chewbacca crossing home plate.
Other clubs have tried their hand at Star Wars theme days in the past, including the Cincinnati Reds and the Arizona Diamondbacks, with Princess Leia taking the mound in her flowing white gown, Stormtroopers holding their weapons up to the refs and Yoda wearing a Dodger hat at a game.
Lucasfilm is owned by The Walt Disney Company. ESPN is 80 percent owned by ABC, Inc., an indirect subsidiary of The Walt Disney Company, and through Wednesday, July 16, ESPN viewers can bid on a VIP Star Wars experience as part of the network’s ESPY Day Auction to Benefit The V Foundation for Cancer Research. The package includes a tour of the Lucasfilm campus, a private screening of a Star Wars film in the Lucasfilm Theatre, a behind-the-scenes look at Star Wars Rebels and tickets to an upcoming Star Wars MLB game at San Francisco’s AT&T Park. It stars John Boyega, Daisy Ridley, Adam Driver, Oscar Isaac, Andy Serkis, Domhnall Gleeson, Lupita Nyong’o and Max von Sydow, who will join the original stars of the saga: Harrison Ford, Carrie Fisher, Mark Hamill, Anthony Daniels, Peter Mayhew and Kenny Baker.
The latest cast additions are Crystal Clarke and Pip Andersen, who were added as part of the open casting calls held in multiple cities in the U.S. and U.K.
The film is scheduled for release on December 18, 2015.
