It turns out these are the droids you’re looking for. C3-PO and R2-D2 are front and center — along with Luke, Leia and the rest of the core cast of the original Star Wars trilogy — in the first art to be released for Marvel Entertainment’s comic book prequels to this year’s Star Wars: The Force Awakens.
The art, created by Phil Noto, illustrator of Marvel’s current Black Widow series, promotes the September launch of Star Wars: Journey to The Force Awakens — Shattered Empire, one of two comic book series that will be part of the Journey to Star Wars: The Force Awakens push announced earlier this week.
(Although the legend on top of the image suggests the title is Journey to Star Wars: The Force Awakens, a Marvel Entertainment tweet features the Star Wars: Journey to The Force Awakens title, in line with earlier reports.)
No other information about the series was revealed when the image debuted on StarWars.com Friday afternoon, although the image itself describes Shattered Empire as “an all-new Marvel Comics event series.”
It’s worth noting that the image features the characters in the outfits worn at the end of 1983’s Return of the Jedi, the last time that any of these characters have been seen canonically. Whether or not that means that the series will pick up immediately from the end of that movie, of course, is something that we won’t know until later this year. Let’s hope that it will feature some Ewoks.
