Ahead of this year’s San Diego Comic-Con, which begins this evening with the annual “Preview Night,” actor John Boyega might be offering a hint of what to expect from Marvel Studio’s upcoming slate on social media.
The actor, who came to attention in Attack the Block and will appear in next year’s Star Wars: Episode VII , tweeted out a couple of surprising quasi-non-sequiters yesterday, at first telling his followers “Marvel role? ….hehehe … I’m damn right aiming for it,” before adding “Currently booking flight to Wakanda.”
STORY Marvel Sets Dates for 5 Films Through 2019
Wakanda is the home country of the Black Panther, a character who has been mentioned many times as being in development as a potential Marvel Studios project. It’s possible—perhaps even likely, given his duties with Disney sibling Lucasfilm’s Star Wars franchise—that Boyega was simply wishing out loud in these tweets, but given that Marvel recently set dates for five new, unnamed, movies through 2019 and studio president Kevin Feige is on record as saying that the current plan for Marvel is to alternate sequels and new characters/franchises, it’s also possible that we might be close to the announcement of a Black Panther movie.
Currently, Marvel has seven untitled movies scheduled between July 2016 and May 2019; of those seven, we know of two certainties—Thor 3 and Doctor Strange—and can fairly safely assume that Avengers 3 and a Guardians of the Galaxy sequel are on the cards as well. That leaves three slots wide open. So the question is, was Boyega trolling the Internet with his wish list, or offering a glimpse at what’s to come from Marvel?
