Star Wars creator George Lucas, whose relationship with Steve Jobs goes back decades, expressed his thoughts on Jobs’ passing Thursday. The former Apple co-founder died at 56 due to complications from pancreatic cancer.

“The magic of Steve was that while others simply accepted the status quo, he saw the true potential in everything he touched and never compromised on that vision. He leaves behind an incredible family and a legacy that will continue to speak to people for years to come,” Lucas said in a statement.

Jobs purchased Pixar from Lucasfilm in 1986, during the period where he was away from Apple. The company began as a division of Lucasfilm, working on movies like Young Sherlock Holmes, which notched some of the earliest advances in computer animated effects.

Buying Pixar for $5 million, Jobs became its chairman and CEO, a position he held until the company’s acquisition by Disney in January 2006.
