‘Suicide Squad’ Extended Cut to Be Released After All

It looks like Suicide Squad will be getting an extended cut after all.

Warner Bros. has released a short teaser announcing an extended cut for the film’s home entertainment release, which will be available on Digital HD Nov. 15 and Blu-ray Dec. 13.

The film, which was a box office hit but was disliked by critics, faced a troubled production, with sources telling The Hollywood Reporter ahead of Suicide Squad‘s release in August that there were multiple competing cuts of the pic, a result of worries from the studio. 

Jared Leto (The Joker) has spoken out about scenes with his character that didn’t make the theatrical cut, but writer-director David Ayer previously suggested that the version of Suicide Squad that hit theaters is the only cut that would see the light of day (“There’s no sort of parallel-universe version of the movie — the released movie is my cut,” he said in August) and that there would be no R-rated cut, ala Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice.

“Honestly, there may be six or seven different versions of the film,” he told Empire, in a story published this summer. “In that version, [test] audiences were left with a lot of questions and a little disoriented as to who to watch and why. So we came up with what we call the ‘dossier’ version, which has Amanda [Viola Davis] presenting the backstories and origins of the various members.” 

Like Suicide Squad, Batman v Superman divided fans upon its release, but it’s extended, R-rated cut was generally well-recieved, with fans who’d taken issue with Zack Snyder’s film generally praising it for filling in what they saw as gaps in the plot.
