PARK CITY — eOne Distribution has taken a bite out of the cannibalism-themed horror movie We Are What We Are. The company has acquired U.S. rights to the film and sources say the deal is in the low-seven-figure range.
Jim Mickle directed the film — an English-language remake of Mexican helmer Jorge Michel Grau’s movie of the same name — from a screenplay he wrote with Nick Damici.
The story kicks off when a devastating storm washes up clues that lead authorities closer and closer to the cannibalistic Parker family. The film has received strong reviews, with Mickle earning praise for helming what has been described as an elevated genre movie. His previous credits include the vampire film Stake Land.
Bill Sage, Ambyr Childers, Julia Garner, Michael Parks, Wyatt Russell and Kelly McGillis star.
eOne, a Canadian mini-major that is in the process of merging with Alliance Films, beat out several other genre labels to take the horror film.
We Are What We Are premiered as part of Sundance’s Park City at Midnight section at Library Center Theatre on Jan. 18.
WME Global represented the filmmakers.
