PARK CITY — HBO Documentary Films has acquired U.S. TV rights to Pussy Riot — A Punk Prayer.
The documentary revolves around Pussy Riot, the radical-feminist punk rock group that garnered worldwide headlines when members were imprisoned after a satirical performance in Moscow and prompted celebrities like Madonna to decry their treatment.
British filmmaker Mike Lerner and Russian Maxin Pozdorovkin collaborated on the documentary, which chronicles the group’s plight that turned into an international story about human rights.
SUNDANCE REVIEW: “Pussy Riot — A Punk Prayer”
A Punk Prayer premiered Jan. 18 as part of Sundance’s World Cinema Documentary Competition category at Prospector Square Theatre. The Hollywood Reporter‘s Justin Lowe said in his review that the film displayed an “endearing scrappiness and commitment to speak truth to power.”
Theatrical rights remain available.
The film marks the fifth high-profile documentary sale of the festival, joining Twenty Feet From Stardom (Radius), Dirty Wars (Sundance Selects), The Summit (Sundance Selects) and History of the Eagles (Showtime).
