The Sundance Film Festival unveiled its official competition lineup Wednesday, and from the look of it filmmakers have traded guns for God and justice this past year.
Whereas the 2010 program was stuffed with war-related content such as Restrepo, The Dry Land and The Tillman Story, the 2011 lineup is rife with explorations of religion and the criminal justice system. Competition films such as Vera Farmiga’s directorial debut Higher Ground and Sean Durkin’s Martha Marcy May Marlene address issues of fanatical faith while the documentaries Crime After Crime from Yoav Potash and Hot Coffee from Susan Saladoff take hard looks at the vagaries of the courts.
“I don’t know how that entered into the psyche of our artist population,” says festival director John Cooper. “The financial crisis shocked America in a whole different way than even 9/11 did. It disturbed us. Our artists are feeling that. Maybe that’s why they’re looking at other American traditions and fundamental parts of who we are.”
The Park City showcase inevitably highlights the newest obsessions of the world’s filmmakers, and this year’s 27th annual program — which runs January 20-30 in Park City, Salt Lake City, Ogden and Sundance, Utah—is no exception. But coming as it does in the midst of a mildly resurgent climate for independent film, the mood all around is one of focused optimism.
In the U.S. narrative competition, Amy Wendel’s Benavides Born follows a high school senior trying to earn a scholarship to the University of Texas at Austin by winning the State Powerlifting Championship, Dee Rees’ Pariah looks at a Bronx teenager searching for sexual expression, Azazel Jacobs’ Terri shows the relationship between an alienated teen and his school’s vice-principal and Maryam Keshavarz’s Circumstance details a wealthy Iranian family struggling to contain a teenager’s growing sexual rebellion.
Youngsters are in for other difficult trials in Gavin Wiesen’s Homework, Elgin James’ Little Birds and Andrew Okpeaha MacLean’s On the Ice. Meanwhile, a potential apocalypse weighs on a working-class husband and father in Jeff Nichols’ Take Shelter, and a policeman races to find out what’s behind a man’s threatened suicide jump in Matthew Chapman’s The Ledge.
Ben Foster (HERE), Esai Morales (Gun Hill Road), Emma Roberts (Homework), Patrick Wilson (The Ledge), Kate Bosworth (The Untitled Sam Levinson Project, Little Birds), Michael Shannon (Take Shelter) and John C. Reilly (Terri) make starring appearances along with Demi Moore, Ellen Burstyn, Terrence Howard, Leslie Mann and Thomas Haden Church. Winter’s Bone star Jennifer Lawrence returns in the competition film Like Crazy, from Drake Doremus, and John Hawkes, also in Bone, returns in Higher Ground and Martha Marcy May Marlene.
The fun for the Sundance staff is the months of movie watching and debate that ultimately whittles down the list. “You get into some heated arguments,” admits programming director Trevor Groth. “The passionate arguments for usually win out over the passionate arguments against.” Cooper notes that the biggest battles take place over the selection of films for the U.S. documentary competition program, since there are always so many fascinating issues on display that appeal to one or another of the programming team.
Of the 16 films that made the cut, there are those that focus on music (Michael Rapaport’s Beats, Rhymes and Life, about A Tribe Called Quest; Morgan Neville’s Troubadours, about James Taylor and Carole King); media (Jennifer Siebel Newsom’s Miss Representation, about the media’s portrayals of women; Andrew Rossi’s Page One: A Year Inside the New York Times); and the environment (Marshall Curry’s If a Tree Falls: A Story of the Earth Liberation Front; Bill Haney’s The Last Mountain, about a battle for the future over the last great mountain in Appalachia).
As always, the more whimsical has its place, as well. Constance Marks’BEING ELMO: A Puppeteer’s Journey takes a look at theman behind the Sesame Street icon, Cindy Meehl’s Buck is about a master horse trainer who espouses non-violence, and Jon Foy’s Resurrect Dead: The Mystery of the Toynbee Tiles explores a rare urban phenomenon.
“[Tiles] really captures such a great spirit about these guys who are trying to solve a mystery,” says Groth. “In this day and age, with Google and the Internet, there are very few mysteries that you can’t solve at your fingertips. We really liked the spirit of this film.”
As part of its new approach of jumping right in and forgoing the traditional opening night film, the first Thursday evening will showcase one narrative film and one documentary from both the U.S. and world cinema competitions, as well as one shorts program. Those movies have not yet been named.
In total, the four competition categories — U.S. and world cinema narrative and documentary — include 58 films, with 25 made by first-time filmmakers. All of the U.S. entries are world premieres. (The fest also presents films in six out-of-competition categories, which will be unveiled Thursday.)
The festival as a whole this year features 115 films from 30 countries, including 94 world premieres and 40 first-time filmmakers. Once again, the selections were drawn from a larger pool than the previous year: 3,812 feature submissions (1,943 U.S.; 1,869 international).
The world cinema dramatic competition category includes work from Colombia (All Your Dead Ones), Ireland (The Guard), Norway (Happy, Happy), Rwanda (Kinyarwanda), Israel (Restoration) and Cuba (Ticket to Paradise). Dai Sako’s Japanese Abraxas features the intriguing logline: “After botching a speech on career guidance at a local high school, a depressed Zen monk with a heavy metal past realizes that only music can revive his spirit,” and actor Paddy Considine delivers the U.K. drama Tyrannosaur.
The global menu for documentaries includes work from Australia (Shut Up Little Man! An Audio Misadventure), Ghana/Switzerland/U.S.(An African Election), India/U.S. (The Bengali Detective), Sweden/U.S. (The Blackpower Mixtape 1967-1975), Germany (The Green Wave) and the Netherlands (Position Among the Stars). Man on Wire director James Marsh returns with the U.K. film Project Nim, which takes a look at the chimpanzee who was taught to communicate with language as he was raised like a human child.
While everyone was unsure of the sales landscape going into last year’s fest with distributors dying and purse strings necessarily tightened, the outcome turned out to be fairly robust, if much more restrained. More than two dozen Sundance-screened films found homes (sometimes twice), though only a few —The Kids Are All Right, Blue Valentine, Buried —were nailed down during the 10-day festival. Most happened in March or later, as dealmakers adopted a more patient approach.
“That spark that happened last year at Sundance has been carrying through in the marketplace and at festivals like Toronto, so this year hopefully we’ll be going in in a really positive place,” says Cooper. “I was excited that people are energized again back into the trenches. We were pleasantly surprised to see it was very healthy at our festival last year, and what’s been even more encouraging is to see those films performing out there in the world.”
Winter’s Bone, which won the dramatic grand jury and Waldo Salt Screenwriting awards at the fest in 2010, in particular has gone on to healthy box office ($7 million) and serious awards recognition, including winning the best feature at the Gotham Independent Film Awards and earning seven Spirit Award nominations.
Groth notes how Roadside Attractions was surprisingly successful in getting Winter’s Bone a wider audience. “I love being at the grocery store and hearing two older people saying they saw this great film,” Groth says. “You could tell they’re not in the film industry, they found that film. That’s a great success story.”
Cooper adds: “You’re afraid these are ‘Sundance Moment Films,’ and you know they’re working there, but will they go outside?” He points to the healthy post-Sundance runs of 2010 films Restrepo, Exit Through the Gift Shop, Joan Rivers: A Piece of Work and The Kids Are All Right, which grossed $21 million domestically for Focus Features after it grabbed the film for around $5 million after last year’s first screening.
This year will showcase a surprising number of higher profile films going into the fest without distribution, which could mean more potential buyers stick around past the typical Monday eject. “I think it’s going to be a very active festival on that front, for sure,” says Cooper, who also notes that sponsorship has risen anew—the festival has five presenting sponsors (the highest level) for the first time in years.
One major logistical change that will affect the Sundance experience is the loss of the Racquet Club Theatre, which is being completely rebuilt this year. As a result, the U.S. narrative competition films will now be shown at the Library Center Theatre, which has 154 fewer seats. At the same time, the out-of-competition New Frontier section has been moved from Main Street to the Miners Hospital near the Library, so “it’ll be pretty hectic there,” Groth admits. “That should be a hot area this year.”
Those moviegoers who use the wait list will be most affected by the shift. But locals around Kimball Junction will have a greater variety of films to choose from this year as a result, since several of the Racquet Club selections will now show at the Redstone Theatre.
“What feels good to me is the overall health of the filmmaking community and how it’s growing more organically and not so sensationalized,” says Cooper. “A lot of our filmmakers in the Premiere section had another film at Sundance in competition in the last few years. The people in the dramatic competition had a lot of shorts in the festival in past years. So it’s really this growing, earned talent.”

U.S. DRAMATIC COMPETITION
Another Earth (Director: Mike Cahill; Screenwriters: Mike Cahill and Brit Marling) — On the eve of the discovery of a duplicate Earth, a horrible tragedy irrevocably alters the lives of two strangers, who begin an unlikely love affair. Cast: William Mapother, Brit Marling, Jordan Baker, Robin Lord Taylor, Flint Beverage.
Benavides Born (Director: Amy Wendel; Screenwriters: Daniel Meisel and Amy Wendel) — A high school senior in a forgotten town has earned admission to the University of Texas at Austin but can’t afford to go. Circumstance / U.S.A., Iran (Director and screenwriter: Maryam Keshavarz) — A wealthy Iranian family struggles to contain a teenager’s growing sexual rebellion and her brother’s dangerous obsession.
Gun Hill Road (Director and screenwriter: Rashaad Ernesto Green) — After three years in prison, Enrique is back in his beloved Bronx, back in the arms of an estranged wife and back in the life of his teenage son, who is stumbling towards a transformation that will put the bonds of their embattled family to the test. Cast: Esai Morales, Judy Reyes, Harmony Santana, Vanessa Aspillaga.
HERE (Director: Braden King; Written By: Braden King and Dani Valent) — On assignment to create a new, more accurate satellite survey of Armenia, an American cartographer forms a powerful bond with an Armenian expatriate and art photographer. Cast: Ben Foster and Lubna Azabal with Narek Nersisyan, Yuri Kostanyan and Sofik Sarkisyan.
Higher Ground (Director: Vera Farmiga; Screenwriters: Carolyn S. Briggs and Tim Metcalfe) — A frustrated young mother turns to a fundamentalist community for answers, but after years of dogma and loss, she must find the courage to ask the questions that will help her reclaim her life. Cast: Vera Farmiga, Joshua Leonard, John Hawkes, Dagmara Dominczyk, Norbert Leo Butz.
Homework (Director and screenwriter: Gavin Wiesen) — Quirky, rebellious George has no ambitions other than to cut his next class. But one day, one girl gives him the perfect reason to figure out who he really is. Cast: Freddie Highmore, Emma Roberts, Michael Angarano, Elizabeth Reaser with Rita Wilson and Blair Underwood.
The Ledge (Director and screenwriter: Matthew Chapman) — Perched on a ledge, a man says he must jump by noon, while a cop races against time to get to the bottom of it. Cast: Charlie Hunnam, Liv Tyler, Patrick Wilson and Terrence Howard with Christopher Gorham.
Like Crazy (Director: Drake Doremus; Screenwriters: Drake Doremus and Ben York Jones) — A young American guy and a young British girl meet in college and fall in love. Their love is tested when she is required to leave the country and they must face the challenges of a long-distance relationship. Cast: Anton Yelchin, Felicity Jones, Jennifer Lawrence, Charlie Bewley, Alex Kingston.
Little Birds (Director and screenwriter: Elgin James) — Amidst the stark landscape of the Salton Sea, two 15-year-old girls test the limits of their friendship when one follows the other to Los Angeles, only to discover that the boredom of home may be better than learning to survive in the big city. Cast: Juno Temple, Kay Panabaker, Leslie Mann, Kate Bosworth, Kyle Gallner.
Martha Marcy May Marlene (Director and screenwriter: Sean Durkin)— Haunted by painful memories and increasing paranoia, a damaged woman struggles to re-assimilate with her family after fleeing an abusive cult.Cast: Elizabeth Olsen, Brady Corbet, Hugh Dancy, John Hawkes, Sarah Paulson.
On the Ice (Director and screenwriter: Andrew Okpeaha MacLean) — On the snow-covered Arctic tundra, two teenagers try to get away with murder.Cast: Josiah Patkotak, Frank Qutuq Irelan, Teddy Kyle Smith, Adamina Kerr, Sierra Jade Sampson.
Pariah (Director and screenwriter: Dee Rees) — When forced to choose between losing her best friend or destroying her family, a Bronx teenager juggles conflicting identities and endures heartbreak in a desperate search for sexual expression. Take Shelter (Director and screenwriter: Jeff Nichols) — A working-class husband and father questions whether his terrifying dreams of an apocalyptic storm signal something real to come or the onset of an inherited mental illness he’s feared his whole life. Terri (Director: Azazel Jacobs; Screenwriters: Patrick Dewitt and Azazel Jacobs) — Orphaned to an uncle who is fading away, mercilessly teased by his peers and roundly ignored by his teachers, Terri is alienated and alone. When the dreaded vice-principal sees something of himself in Terri, they establish a friendship which opens Terri up to the possibility that life is not something to be endured, but something to be shared, and even enjoyed. The Untitled Sam Levinson Project (Director and screenwriter: Sam Levinson) — A pair of reckless siblings are dragged into a chaotic family wedding by their overwrought mother. Cast: Demi Moore, Kate Bosworth, Jeffrey DeMunn, Ellen Barkin, Ellen Burstyn, Thomas Haden Church.
