Sundance: Fox Searchlight Acquires ‘Calvary’ (Exclusive)

PARK CITY – Calvary, starring Brendan Gleeson, has closed a deal with Fox Searchlight for U.S. distribution rights as well as some international territories. A source pegs the deal at north of $2.5 million.

The movie reteams John Michael McDonagh with Gleeson, who previously worked together on The Guard, which premiered at the 2011 Sundance Film Festival.

Calvary tells the story of a priest, Father James (Gleeson), whose life is threatened by an unseen man during confession. The darkly comedic drama also stars Chris O’Dowd, Kelly Reilly, Aidan Gillen, Dylan Moran and Marie-Josée Croze.

Calvary premiered at Eccles Theatre on Jan. 19 to strong reviews and was produced by Chris Clark, Flora Fernandez-Marengo and James Flynn.

The sale will be Searchlight’s second of the fest, coming a day after it nabbed the sci-fi movie I Origins for more than $3 million.
