In its third deal of the festival, Sony Pictures Worldwide Acquisitions has acquired worldwide rights to John Cho-Debra Messing thriller Search. A source pegged the deal at $5 million.
Directed by Aneesh Chaganty, the film centers on David (Cho), a father searching for his missing teenage daughter. While a helpful detective searches for the girl out in the physical world, David delves into her online environment as he searches through the traces she left behind on her laptop. Much of the film unfolds almost through the prism of a screen — smartphone and computer.
Chaganty and Sev Ohanian wrote the screenplay.
The film was produced by Timur Bekmambetov, Ohanian, Adam Sidman and Natalie Qasabian. Executive producers are Ana Liza Muravina, Maria Zatulovskaya and Igor Tsay. Search, which marks the feature helming debut of Chaganty, won the 2018 Alfred P. Sloan Feature Film Prize at Sundance.
SPWA snapped up Search following its Sundance night world premiere, where it screened in the NEXT section. The deal comes on the heels of SPWA scooping up all international rights to the Nick Offerman starrer Hearts Beat Loud on Friday and Debra Granik’s Leave No Trace on Sunday.
