TOKYO — Sunshine on Leith, Dexter Fletcher‘s big-screen version of the U.K. musical, will open the Skip City International D-Cinema Festival 2014 with its Japan premiere on July 19 in Kawaguchi, Saitama.
Fletcher’s directorial debut, Wild Bill, screened at the 2012 edition of the festival, garnering a runner-up award in the Audience Choice category.
Sunshine on Leith will open in Japan on Aug 1.
This year’s fest will see 12 films from around the world compete in the main feature category, as well as 14 animated Japanese shorts in a new section. The 12-film short section will only screen domestic productions.

More than 700 entries from 84 countries were received for this year’s edition. A total of 38 films will be screened.
The festival was launched in 2004 to nurture the nascent digital-filmmaking sector but has since refocused on up-and-coming talent.
Skip City will run from July 19 to 27 at the Sai-No-Kuni Visual Plaza in Kawaguchi, north of Tokyo.
