Super 8, J.J. Abrams‘ ode to Steven Spielberg and 1980s Amblin movies, hits shelves Nov. 22 and a select few fans, the crafty ones, will be able to get their hands on Blu-ray/DVD Combo packs signed by Abrams.
Paramount Home Entertainment is running a promotion via Twitter where fans are getting clues to the location of the signed packs via the @Super8Movie Twitter account and Super8Tweet.com.
PHV didn’t give an indication of how many of the signed packs there are but did say they will be in 20 cities across the U.S.
The (insert your own adjective) Conan the Barbarian also comes out Nov. 22 but let’s keep on the PHV track. The division is kicking off Paramount Pictures’ centennial in 2012 by releasing, for the first time on Blu-ray, Wings, the World War One drama that won the very first best picture Academy Award in 1929.
The cast of literally thousands in the war epic included Clara Bow as well as future star Gary Cooper in a bit part, and at the time was perhaps the most expensive film ever made, with a budget of $2 million.
The studio put the picture through an extensive restoration; the original negative was lost decades ago and even the duplicate negative was in poor shape so restorers used an original continuity script and tinting/toning guides from the period to craft a new print. They also used the film’s original paper score, found in the Library of Congress, and recorded it with an orchestra.
Wings, which will come with three documentaries, will hit stores Jan. 24, 2012.
And going in a totally (but great) direction, Image Entertainment is releasing Nude Nuns With Big Guns on Feb. 14, 2012. I’m pretty sure this movie didn’t win any Oscars but the title says it all in this revenge grindhouse-style movie. Image is having fun with the title, calling the main character in promotional materials a “sister of no mercy” whose “enemies don¹t have a prayer of a chance.”
One last 180, just for fun: Disney is releasing animated classics Lady and the Tramp and Cinderella are being given the Blu-ray Diamond Collection treatment and will be released from the Disney vault for a limited time. Lady will be released Feb. 7, 2012, while Cinderella sometime in fall, 2012. Disney isn¹t releasing many details on Cinderella but Tramp will come with three never-before-seen deleted scenes.
