Dakota Johnson Succumbs to the Nightmare in Luca Guadagnino’s Horror Remake ‘Suspiria’

Suspiria has dropped a long-awaited trailer, after a June teaser gave moviegoers a brief taste of the look and feel of the new film from filmmaker Luca Guadagnino, fresh off of the success of his Call Me By Your Name. 

The film, a tribute to the 1977 original from Dario Argento, stars Dakota Johnson as a gifted dancer, Susie Bannion, who finds herself drawn to a prestigious school in Berlin that also happens to be a witches coven. The prestigious academy, lead by witch Madame Blanc (played by Tilda Swinton), will bring horrifying consequences upon the young dancer.

Mia Goth and Chloe Grace Moretz also star as fellow dancers. And Jessica Harper, the original Bannion, also makes an appearance. Thom Yorke composed the score. The film taunts viewers with the tagline, “Some will succumb to the nightmare. Others will finally wake up.”

The trailer opens with Patricia (Moretz) talking about a witch who has absolute control over her, as an image of a woman in dark sunglasses appears, possibly witch Helena Markos. A young Susie Bannion sees herself in Berlin before finally coming to the academy as an adult dancer before we see the witches and their power, darkness, tears and sighs.

Sara (Goth) fears that Susie has gone over to the dark side, before she herself explores the hidden passages of the building. Fans of the original know that the nightmare then will truly begin. 

Back in April, Amazon Studios released a preview clip at CinemaCon in Las Vegas that shocked attendees. As Johnson dances in one room, her actions contort the body of another dancer in a parallel room, resulting in gruesome images and terrifying sound effects. 

The film will world premiere in Venice on Sept. 1 and be released in N.Y. and L.A. on Oct. 26 before expanding nationwide Nov. 2.
