The Light of the Moon SXSW - Publicity - H 2017
Imagination Worldwide, the Los Angeles-based distribution company with an emphasis on female storytelling, has picked up the worldwide rights to rape drama The Light of the Moon.
The movie, which took home an audience award at SXSW, follows New York architect Bonnie (Brooklyn Nine-Nine‘s Stephanie Beatriz) after she is sexually assaulted during a night out with friends, and consequently struggles to regain intimacy and control of her life and mental well-being.
Michael Stahl-David, Conrad Ricamora and Catherine Curtin also star in the feature, which is the feature film debut for writer-director-producer Jessica M. Thompson.
The Hollywood Reporter‘s review of the movie reads: “With the wider cultural conversation about rape culture, especially in the U.S., raging in the media, this honest and complex engagement with the subject is particularly welcome.”
“Watching the news, has there ever been a more vital time for a film to face our rape culture head on? When I first saw The Light of the Moon at SXSW, I thought it was the most raw, honest portrayal of life post-sexual assault that I had ever seen,” said Michelle Mower, CEO of Imagination Worldwide.
Thompson added: “We made this film to contribute to the dialogue to end rape culture around the globe, and having a strong distribution partner will allow us to spread this message far and wide.”
Imagination Worldwide will release the movie theatrically in the United States and Canada in the fourth quarter of 2017, with additional plans for a college campus tour. They will coordinate with international distributor for a worldwide DVD and VOD release, with The Film Collaborative handling worldwide film festival strategy.
Orly Ravid of Mitchell Silberberg handled the deal on behalf of Imagination Worldwide, while Paradigm and The Javdan Firm negotiated the deal on behalf of the filmmakers.
Earlier this month, Imagination Worldwide, which was recently acquired by Mower, released Amber Tamblyn’s feature directorial debut, Paint it Black, and acquired foreign rights to Matthew McDuffie’s drama Burning Bodhi, starring Kaley Cuoco.
