Taken 3 will be shown in 3D in China, as EuropaCorp will release the latest installment of Liam Neeson‘s trilogy in the enhanced format.
This follows the blockbuster release of Luc Besson‘s Lucy on 6,000 3D and Imax 3D screens across China, which nabbed $20 million in ticket sales in its first weekend. It was the most successful launch of all time for a French film in China. It took in over $44.8 million at the box office there and went on to $458.8 million worldwide.
Foreign audiences have been taken with the Olivier Megaton-directed actioner so far – adding $82.4 million from its release across some European territories to its $168.4 million global box-office haul so far.
Following the success of Lucy‘s release in 3D both in China and Besson’s home country of France, “Some territories have shown strong interest in distributing Taken 3 in 3D, alongside its 2D release,” said EuropaCorp chief marketing officer Fabrice Denizot.
The film will also get a theatrical release in France, and additional markets for the DVD release.
“We are very careful with 3D. When a 3D version is considered to bring even more intensity to the film, we are working very closely with filmmakers to ensure a great visual experience. Lucy‘s 3D version was praised by industry professionals and the audience wherever it was screened. And so will Taken 3,” said EuropaCorp CEO Christophe Lambert.
Taken 3 will be released in China with its local partner, Fundamental Films, which also partnered with EuropaCorp on the release of Lucy.
