2014 marks the 30th anniversary of the heroes in a half-shell known as the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles — and to celebrate, IDW Publishing has prepared a special birthday treat: the first official Turtles collaboration between co-creators Kevin Eastman and Peter Laird in more than two decades.
The two have worked together to create a new cover for an anniversary anthology featuring new stories by multiple creators who have worked on the franchise over its long history, including Stephen Murphy, who worked on both animated and comic book versions of the characters, Frank Fosco and Tom Waltz, among many others.
“Getting to work with my co-creator Peter Laird again is the icing on the cake — and then some,” Eastman said of the collaboration. “It really took me back 30 years, to the earliest days, with the fondest memories, and why we got into this business in the first place.”
While Eastman has been working on IDW’s Turtles line for some years now, Laird has stayed away for the most part — something that may change in the future. On his blog, the cartoonist described the experience of inking Eastman again as “a blast,” adding “I hope we do it again, and soon.” Perhaps some brand-new Eastman/Laird comics could be in the offing?
