A Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles movie that doesn’t look particularly goofy or feature Vanilla Ice? It sounds unlikely, but judging from the first trailer for this summer’s big-screen reboot of the heroes on a half-shell, that seems to be what we’re getting.
The trailer meets many of the criteria we expect from a regular superhero movie, including shots of a crowd running in panic, wide-scale destruction, a familiar face or two (in this case, Megan Fox playing reporter April O’Neill) and that sound effect that sounds like a really big computer shutting down. No sign of Will Arnett as wise-cracking cameraman Vern Fenwick this time around, but you have to save something for the second trailer.

Most importantly, though, we get to see the Turtles themselves and — well, they look pretty good, really. Their origins may have been revised for this movie (apparently, April’s father was involved in their creation this time around, judging by the dialogue in the trailer), but they look as good as they ever have, if not better. Could this be — say it quietly — a good Turtles movie?
Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, directed by Jonathan Liebesman and produced by Michael Bay, is released August 8.
