On the heels of last year’s successful Netflix adaptation, Greg Rucka and Leandro Fernández are returning to their Image Comics property The Old Guard, and they’re not alone — the new six issue series The Old Guard: Tales Through Time is an anthology featuring contributions from a host of fellow creators.
The stories in Tales Through Time span centuries, with stories following the immortal warriors in periods from the 13th through the 20th centuries. Creators attached to the project include Brian Michael Bendis, Kelly Sue DeConnick, David F. Walker, Rick Burchett, Valentine De Landro, Nicola Scott, and many more. Rucka and Fernández will contribute stories to the first and final issues in the series.
“I’m always a little stunned when people want to come and play with our toys, to be honest,” Rucka told Polygon, which broke news of the series. “And it helps me with my own writing. It’s easy to get set onto a track with a character or an idea — having someone come in from outside for a visit, so to speak, allows a fresh perspective, and pushes me to rethink my own assumptions and conclusions about these characters.”
The Old Guard launched in 2017 as a five-issue miniseries, which was quickly optioned by Skydance Media for a movie adaptation, with Rucka on board as screenwriter. Production on the adaptation began in mid-2019, with the second comic book series, The Old Guard: Force Multiplied, debuting in December of that year. The movie — directed by Gina Prince-Bytheood and starring Charlize Theron, KiKi Layne, and Chiwetel Ejiofor — premiered on Netflix to substantial acclaim.
The Old Guard: Tales Through Time will be released digitally and in comic book stores April 21.
