The latest trailer for Netflix’s upcoming Ryan Murphy movie The Prom features high-schooler Emma Nolan (Jo Ellen Pellman) taking a stand and a troupe of Broadway actors played by James Corden, Meryl Streep, Nicole Kidman and Andrew Rannells seeking to make a splash in small-town Indiana as they come to her aid.
The film, based on the Tony-nominated Broadway musical of the same name, is set to hit select theaters in December and start streaming on Dec. 11.
The story follows New York City stage stars Dee Dee Allen (Streep) and Barry Glickman (Corden) who’ve just suffered a costly Broadway flop when they learn of an Indiana high-school student who’s been banned from attending the prom with her girlfriend (Ariana DeBose). Seeking to resurrect their public images, they set off for the midwest, with cynical actors Angie (Kidman) and Trent (Rannells). While the theater stars’ self-absorbed activism backfires, they ultimately join forces to give Emma a memorable prom where all are welcome.
The new preview reveals more of Emma’s backstory and how the stage stars come to her rescue, opening with Emma recording a video to tell her story.
Cut to Broadway, where signs promote Eleanor! The Eleanor Roosevelt Musical and Barry, Dee Dee and Angie are sitting at an empty bar as Angie sees Emma’s story trending on Twitter.
“We have got to go down there, raise holy hell,” Dee Dee says.
Barry adds: “We will be the biggest thing to happen in Indiana since — whatever’s happened in Indiana.”
The rest of the trailer features scenes of singing, dancing and the Broadway stars taking the town by storm as they bond with Emma.
The preview also features a tender, extended version of the teaser-trailer scene where Angie tells Emma she does have friends.
“I thought that when my parents rejected me, that I would never feel any worse,” Emma says. “I’ve never felt so alone in my life.”
Angie replies that she’s not alone and interspersed with celebratory prom scenes are ones where Emma appears to be comforted by Dee Dee and Barry.
The trailer ends with Emma via voiceover saying, “I’m going to take a stand for all of the people out there who love someone in a way the world just doesn’t understand.”
Directed by Murphy from a screenplay by Broadway scribes Bob Martin and Chad Beguelin, The Prom also stars Kerry Washington, Keegan-Michael Key, Tracey Ullman and Mary Kay Place.
