A police droid, a trio of party-hungry colleagues and a frazzled hotelier are heading to theaters this weekend with the releases of Chappie, Unfinished Business and The Second Best Exotic Marigold Hotel.
Find out what The Hollywood Reporter‘s critics are saying about the weekend’s new offerings (as well as which film will likely top the weekend’s box office).
Sharlto Copley, Dev Patel, Hugh Jackman and Sigourney Weaver star in director Neill Blomkamp‘s sci-fi thriller about a police droid who begins to think for himself. THR chief film critic Todd McCarthy writes in his review that it features “unappealing one-note characters, retread concepts, implausible motivations and a ludicrous survival rate given the firepower expended upon the central figures.”
Director Ken Scott‘s (Delivery Man) comedy about co-workers heading to Europe on a business trip stars Vince Vaughn, Tom Wilkinson and Dave Franco. “This is the latest example of a movie that doesn’t work hard enough to freshen up formulas used and abused by [various] filmmakers,” writes THR film critic Jon Frosch in his review.
The Second Best Exotic Marigold Hotel
Two vacationers vie for one lone room at the hotel in director John Madden‘s dramedy. Maggie Smith, Judi Dench and Richard Gere star. According to THR film critic Leslie Felperin, the film “is a sluggish also-ran compared to its predecessor.” Read her full review here.
Director Robert Kenner‘s (Food, Inc.) documentary looks at people who are paid to pose as scientific experts in fields such as climate change. THR film critic Stephen Farber writes in his review that “Kenner has managed to make the movie entertaining as well as enlightening.”
