In Think Like a Man Too, Taraji P. Henson, Meagan Good, Regina Hall, Wendi McLendon-Covey and Gabrielle Union get high on pot strips and head to the club to have some fun. Some of that fun includes remaking the Bell Biv DeVoe hit “Poison.” But that wasn’t always the plan.
Screenwriters Keith Merryman and David Newman tell The Hollywood Reporter that they originally planned to use a different ’90s track for the scene. They say director Tim Story and producer Will Packer had the final say.

“The original idea was to use En Vogue’s ‘My Lovin’ (Never Gonna Get It)’ and have Wendi belt out the very end, but ultimately it came down to Tim and Will’s decisions. Tim’s the video guy,” says Newman.
“My Lovin’ ” was released in 1992 and peaked at No. 2 on the Billboard Hot 100 charts (though it hit No. 1 on the Billboard Hot R&B Singles chart). 1990’s “Poison” peaked at No. 3 on the Hot 100 and also topped the R&B Singles chart.
“We couldn’t even imagine it not being ‘Poison’ now. We knew the best idea would ultimately win,” says Merryman.
After getting the cast onboard with the new song and routine, they recorded the song first in a music studio and shot the video scenes over a span of two days.

“That song is just a classic and I also knew that if we just gave the audience enough visuals it would definitely be more exciting than just watching some people on stage sing or just dancing around,” director Tim Story tells THR.
For Story, the Think Like a Man sequel was the perfect platform for showcasing his music video expertise. Story began his career directing videos for acts like India.Arie, ’N Sync and Tyrese in the late ’90s.
“When that sequence was coming together, I just thought, wow, people are going to have a lot of fun with the music video and just visually it just made that section really fun. I’m really excited that people are responding the way they did to it,” he says.
