An Instagram tease for next year’s Thor: Ragnarok has prompted even more speculation than might be expected, thanks to some well placed background details that offer surprising spoilers about the return of Chris Hemsworth’s Asgardian Avenger.
Hemsworth posted an image of himself and co-star Tom Hiddleston relaxing on the set of the upcoming Marvel Studios movie on the social media platform Sunday, but more interesting than seeing the two actors wearing the long hair of their comic book alter egos were the headlines on the fake newspapers behind Hemsworth in the shot.

With headlines reading “Has Thor Returned,” “Hammer Attack,” and “Time Square Murder” — apparently, Marvel’s version of the New York locale isn’t called “Times Square”; that, or some props person needs to check their spelling — it suggests that Thor’s return to Earth for the first time since the events of 2015’s Avengers: Age of Ultron won’t be a reason for celebration, although apparently he’s not coming alone; the “Has Thor Returned” headline is accompanied by a sub-headline announcing “God of Thunder Strikes It Up With Lady Justice,” which might be a reference to Tessa Thompson’s Valkyrie. A fourth headline reads, simply, “Villain Loki Spotted.”
Currently, filming on the movie’s Brisbane location is taking place on a set intended to recreate New York, which raises an additional question: given that the few plot details known for the third Thor center around an alien planet and Cate Blanchett’s queen of the underworld, what exactly has brought Thor and Loki back to New York City?
Thor: Ragnarok is scheduled for release Nov. 3, 2017.
