Thor: Ragnarok‘s teaser trailer has generated a thunderous response online, with Chris Hemsworth’s hero pleasing crowds by squaring off against Mark Ruffalo’s Hulk.
There’s plenty to unpack in the first footage from director Taika Waititi’s bold step into the Marvel Cinematic Universe — including new villains, old foes and even the destruction of Thor’s home.
It was a shock when Vision (Paul Bettany) picked up Thor’s hammer in Avengers: Age of Ultron, but Hela (Cate Blanchett) does him one better — by shattering it. That hammer would surely come in handy when The Hulk comes into the picture. (For more, we’ve done a deep dive here on all the times Mjolnir has been destroyed in the comics._
Hela’s Classic Look
We see the villain rocking the costume creator Jack Kirby gave her years ago (horns included).
What’s Loki Up To?
The end of Doctor Strange showed Thor on Earth looking for his brother in a scene that is expected to be included in Ragnarok. So, what exactly is Loki (Tom Hiddleston) doing in this trailer (aside from showing off some cool knives)? One theory: could Loki be engaged in a bet with the Grandmaster (Jeff Goldblum) over Thor’s freedom? Their positioning during the gladiatorial match suggests they are foes rather than friends, and the Grandmaster in the comics is quite a gambler.
Is This The End of Asgard?
In traditional Norse mythology, “Ragnarok” is the massive future battle that kills a number of major figures, including Thor, Loki and Odin. Thor: Ragnarok, meanwhile, has Hela proclaiming “Asgard is dead” before a montage that seems to show the entire place being engulfed in flames. There’s much more going on here than meets the eye, not least of which being Hela’s entire modus operandi: she’s the ruler of Hel. As such, she gets to keep the souls of all brave Asgardians who die without honor…which might mean, if she killed everyone in Asgard, then she’s suddenly got a very well populated realm, for reasons unknown. (Also worth noting: Asgardians can, theoretically, escape Hel and make it back to the land of the living, based on comic book mythology, so don’t be too worried about the Asgardians just yet.)
Who Is the Valkyrie?
In comic book lore, Valkyrie is an Asgardian warrior who guards over the souls of dead warriors on their journey to Valhalla — the opposite of Hel, for want of a better way to put it. In the movie, however, Tessa Thompson’s Valkyrie seems to be working for the Grandmaster, gathering warriors for his gladiatorial games. Is there more going on with this character than meets the eye, or is the movie incarnation merely just using the name of the comic book original and little else?
The Work Friend Reunion
Hulk and Thor sat out Captain America: Civil War, so it’s only fair that they would get to fight here. The pair previously fought in 2012’s Avengers…but Hulk wasn’t rocking cool gladiatorial sandals at the time, so all bets are off about who will win here.
Thor: Ragnarok opens Nov. 3.
