TORONTO — The Tibetan road movie The Sun-Beaten Path by director Sonthar Gyal on Thursday won the Dragons & Tigers award at the Vancouver International Film Festival.
Cinematographer Gyal’s directorial debut, which had its North American bow in Vancouver, won the juried award and $10,000 for a film by an Asian director early in their career.
The Sun-Beaten Path, which stars Yeshe Lhadruk, Lo Kyi and Kalzang Rinchen, portrays a young man making a pilgrimage to Lhasa to overcome guilt over his mother dying in a motorcycle accident.
The Vancouver jury, comprising director Ann Hui (A Simple Life), fest director Simon Field and actor/director Yang Ikjune, also gave special mentions to Baby Factory, by Filipino director Eduardo Roy Jr., and Recreation, by Japanese filmmaker Nagano Yoshihiro.
The Vancouver International Film Festival continues to Oct. 14.
