UPDATED: Documentarian Tim Hetherington, co-director of the Oscar-nominated Restrepo, was killed Wednesday in Misrata, Libya, according to multiple reports.
He had been documenting a fight between Muammar Gaddafi’s forces and Libyan rebels.
Getty photographer Chris Hondros suffered a severe brain injury in the attack and is in extremely critical condition, reports the New York Times. Three other journalists were injured.

In addition to film work, Hetherington was known for producing pieces for ABC News’ Nightline from Afghanistan’s Korengal Valley.
The Hetherington family said in a statement, “It is with great sadness we learned that our son and brother photographer and filmmaker Tim Hetherington was killed today in Misrata, Libya by a rocket-propelled grenade. Tim will be remembered for his amazing images and his Academy Award nominated documentary Restrepo which he co-produced with his friend Sebastian Junger.
ABC News’ James Goldston said, “Tim was one of the bravest photographers and filmmakers I have ever met. During his shooting for the Nightline specials he very seriously broke his leg on a night march out of a very isolated forward operating base that was under attack. He had the strength and character to walk for four hours through the night on his shattered ankle without complaint and under fire, enabling that whole team to reach safety.”
Hetherington’s other television and film credits included The Devil Came on Horseback, about the genocide in Darfur, Liberia: An Uncivil War, and Diary, a short film about Hetherington’s work in combat zones.
