Spider-Man star Tobey Maguire is one of several celebrities and industry vets being sued for more than $4 million won during unofficial poker games at luxury Beverly Hills hotels, the Associated Press reports.
The lawsuits were filed by a bankruptcy trustee who was trying to recoup money for people who were caught in an alleged Ponzi scheme.
According to court records, players in the undocumented poker games — which took place during 2006 and 2009 — and won up to six figures received checks from Bradley Ruderman, the individual responsible for the alleged Ponzi scheme.
Maguire is being sued for $311,000 plus interest. Maguire’s attorney Robert Barta did not return a phone message seeking comment, but the AP reports that he is expected to file a response to the lawsuit.
In total, 22 people have been targeted including The Notebook director Nick Cassavetes, who is being asked to return $73,000 in winnings plus interest. According to the lawsuit, Cassavetes took part in one game in 2007.
Others being targeted is Alec Gores, who, along with his brother, attempted to purchase Miramax last year, for $445,600. Welcome Back Kotter actor Gabe Kaplan is also being sued for $62,000.
Earlier this year, Ruderman was sentenced to 10 years in federal prison after pleading guilty to wire fraud, investment advisor fraud and willful failure to file taxes.
According to the lawsuits, the poker tournaments were organized by Molly Bloom, who is being sued for $475,000.
