Inferno, Ron Howard and Tom Hanks‘ third adaptation of one of Dan Brown‘s Robert Langdon novels, won’t hit theaters until 2016. Sony Pictures had initially scheduled the movie’s release for Dec. 18, 2015, but with production not scheduled to begin in Italy until the spring, the studio is shifting the release date to Oct. 14, 2016.
The move leaves J.J. Abrams‘ Star Wars: Episode VII, from Disney, has the major release now set to open on Dec. 18, 2015. That date is also currently occupied by Universal’s The Nest, a comedy starring Tina Fey and Amy Poehler as sisters, which Jason Moore is directing.

Howard is directing Inferno from a screenplay by David Koepp, with Brian Grazer producing. Hanks will again play Harvard professor Landon, who this time around becomes caught up in a new art-filled mystery that takes him to Florence and Venice. The team previously collaborated on The Da Vinci Code, which grossed $758 million in 2006, and its follow-up Angels & Demons, which grossed 486 million in 2009.
