After three years — and a missed opportunity in last year’s Avengers: Age of Ultron — Thor’s beloved half-brother has returned…on social media, at least.
Tom Hiddleston launched his Instagram account Tuesday morning with an image of him in his Loki costume, with a caption reading, simply, “He’s back!”
To call Loki’s return “long awaited” would be an understatement. The character last appeared in 2013’s Thor: The Dark World, which set up a cliffhanger for future Thor appearances by revealing that Odin’s (Anthony Hopkins) place had been taken in Asgard by a disguised Loki — and then, nothing. Hiddleston filmed an appearance for Avengers: Age of Ultron, but it was cut in postproduction amid concerns that it was too confusing for viewers.
For a character whose popularity partially defined Marvel Studios’ “Phase One” — think of the reaction Hiddleston’s 2013 Comic-Con appearance received — it’s been strange to see a complete lack of Loki during the last few years. Whether or not his return in Thor: Ragnarok — currently in production, with Taiki Waititi directing — heralds more appearances as the collective Marvel Universe heads toward Avengers: Infinity War remains to be seen, but if it does, it’s hard to imagine fans being anything other than thrilled.
